I was reading this book, "The Four Agreements" and my cousin seems to be thrilled by it. I don’t' understand how the author can say that religion is society's dream and not our dream; then he uses references from the bible (In the beginning was the word, the word was with God and the word was God.). Isn’t that a contradictory? I mean, I understand using the reference to point out that even religion recognizes that spoken word is VERY powerful, but that is not how he said it in the book.

Don't take compliments!? I also don't understand how a little girl's answer to changing her agreement of having a terrible singing voice to having a beautiful voice by taking compliments...when we aren't supposed to take things personally...not even compliments. I find this a contradictory as well. How are we supposed to change agreements like this if we can’t take compliments?

How is taking compliments a bad thing when you aren’t using them as a desperate need to validate our worth? Is this even possible…or do we NEVER take a compliment? What if I just want the opinion of someone I admire…not to validate my worth but to actually know what a fellow person thinks of my work? Is it wrong to want to know what their dream mirror reflects from my work? How does one improve his abilities without the opinion of other people? How does one make money without seeing what is in demand based on society’s opinion…compliments good or bad. How can this rule of not taking things personally work for an individual when individuals live within a society. How can one love without the love of another. If you love someone and you don’t receive their love in return…then your love if pointless or worse ill. I just don’t understand why an individual must live alone in their own dream in a world filled with other dreamers. How do we communicate if we are all speaking in our own dream language!? This makes no since to me at all.
